![]() “If I’m him and they’re offering me $40 million and it’s relatively close to home, it’s like, as much as I’d hate to think of it, if it was me, I would probably take the chance,” Kenealy said. Kenealy said the Cubs’ offer was lucrative enough for her to understand Counsell’s decision. “I’m so high on what we have that I can’t imagine somebody wanting to be somewhere else.” “Definitely not betrayed,” Attanasio replied. Attanasio was asked Monday if he felt betrayed. The Cubs went way beyond that figure by firing David Ross and luring Counsell. “Especially with what Brett meant to the Packers, I think the overwhelming majority of people would still lean toward Brett eventually ending up with the Vikings as the biggest betrayal in Wisconsin sports,” Neitzel said.Īttanasio said the Brewers offered Counsell a deal that would have made him the highest-paid manager in baseball “both per season and the total package.” Attanasio didn’t specify terms, but Cleveland’s Terry Francona was believed to be the highest-paid manager in MLB this past season with a salary of $4.5 million. Gabe Neitzel, a sports talk show host for 94.5 ESPN FM in Milwaukee, said the Favre comparisons have been coming up on his station. Laura Hemming, a partial season ticket holder since the mid-1990s, said the news “felt like kind of a gut punch.”Ĭounsell’s exit represents the latest setback for Wisconsin sports fans the same year that the Green Bay Packers traded four-time MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets, though this move to a division foe was more similar to Packers Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre finishing his career with the Minnesota Vikings.Īt least in that instance, Favre spent a season with the New York Jets before heading to Minnesota rather than going directly from the Packers to a division rival. “My initial reaction was, ‘Oh my God, the Cubs? Why did it have to be the Cubs.’ “ “You know in the first ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ movie where they’re digging to find the ark of the covenant and they open this big tomb thing and they look down and Indiana Jones says, ‘Snakes? Why did it have to be snakes?’ “ said Kay Kenealy of Waukesha, Wisconsin, a Brewers partial season ticket holder since 2006. ![]() ![]() The fact he went just 90 miles south to the Brewers’ biggest rival made his exit doubly painful for fans. I half expected total strangers to come up to me and ask me about it, to which I’d reply with the full reference number and an explanation of the 1/10th second chronograph, and my new friend would walk away enlightened and informed. You hear a lot about gold watches being ostentatious and flashy. One thing I can say for sure is that it didn’t seem to attract attention. But now that I was out in the world (and you’re never more fully “in the world” than waiting for a train in midtown Manhattan) I wondered to myself if there could ever be a scenario where a watch like this would seem normal to me. In the office, it didn’t feel strange to wear it because it’s a little watch bubble where everyone is more or less thinking and talking about watches constantly. I’ve been wearing this gold watch for the better part of a full workday at this point, and I still catch myself feeling genuinely surprised when I look toward my wrist to check the time (or just admire the thing) and see the luster of gold and not the cool slab of steel I’m used to. ![]() More to confirm that it’s there, on my wrist, and that I haven’t imagined this whole scenario somehow.Īnyway, here I was, not quite post-pandemic, in an absolute sea of humanity, throngs of people passing each other to who knows where, just to get away for what I’m sure they all hoped would be a relaxing weekend of cookouts, parades, and all the other trappings of a leisurely summer weekend. I caught myself looking at the Chronomaster Open frequently. I found a (relatively) quiet place to sit down and aimlessly stare at my phone while I waited for the “Stand By” message to come over the intercom. ![]() Late afternoon on the Friday of Memorial Day weekend, it turns out, is a busy time to travel. It turns out, I had plenty of time to ponder this while waiting in Moynihan Train Hall, certainly a more aesthetically pleasing venue to wear this particular watch than the subterranean and generally horrifying Penn Station, just across 8th Avenue. If I had the ability to sleep with one eye open, believe me when I tell you I’d have it trained on the solid gold chronograph sitting on my bedside table. This is the nature of taking on an expensive loaned watch. Over the course of a long Memorial Day weekend, the rose gold Chronomaster Open would barely leave my wrist, and never leave my sight. I opened it up, removed the watch, set the time, and strapped it on. Frankly, I can’t imagine why.Īnd so it was that on my last day in the office, a package arrived with the watch inside, unceremoniously presented in its black Zenith travel case. People generally don’t just go around asking me if I want to borrow a brand new gold chronograph for a few days. Well, let me tell you: that’s not an opportunity I’m going to miss. I honestly didn’t even realize while I was quickly skimming the email that it was the rose gold version being offered up. Would I be interested in taking one of the new Zenith Chronomaster Opens on loan for a bit so I could write about it for the site? Yes, of course I would. ![]() ![]() You simply cannot hear these Ligeti pieces without seeing Bowman’s journey in your mind. Whatever the original composers intentions were, in the 20th and 21st centuries, the pieces used in this movie are now associated with it forever. Even The Simpsons used “The Blue Danube” for a space docking scene (Homer and a potato chip) in an homage to 2001. They have all become intertwined with the film forever. These are challenging pieces of music, but not difficult to enjoy. It is over only when Zarathustra speaks again, and humanity has taken its next giant leap. The film at this point became its most experimental: impressionist images and obscure dissonant music put many viewers off balance as they struggled to comprehend just what the hell was going on. David Bowman experienced great terror as he plunged inside it, and this is the music that accompanied his long trip into the beyond. Once again, we must face the Monolith and what it means. Mankind meets its future on “Jupiter and Beyond”, a combination of three Ligeti pieces. The coldness of space is easy to feel from inside their stark white starship, and Khachaturian painting the tone. Astronauts David Bowman and Frank Poole seem disconnected from their humanity the music has more feelings than they do. Khachaturian’s “Gayane Ballet Suite” is a somber piece, depicting the boredom and routine of interplanetary space flight. It is mildly disconcerting, as is what Floyd’s team finds. Floyd’s trip across the lunar surface to meet the Monolith. Ligeti returns, as he must, with “Lux Aeterna”. But space is a cold deadly place, hostile to almost all known life. This complex docking maneuver requires no dialogue, just Strauss. A shuttle docks with a spinning space station spinning of course to create artificial gravity that humans need to survive long-term in space. The brilliance of the “Blue Danube” in the film is how Kubrick managed to capture the dance-like coordinated movements of objects in space. “The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.”)Īfter the chaos of “Requiem” and “Atmospheres”, Strauss’ “Blue Danube” offers a warm respite. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong.” 2. “When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. Clarke’s “third law” states “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic,” and that describes one aspect of the Monolith in 2001. The Monolith is a tool of our growth as a race and a stark warning that there are things beyond that our science is not equipped to explain. In the film, this unsettling music appears when we encounter the enigmatic Monolith. Voices sing, each one in their own world, but joining together to join a coherent piece. Unease returns with the bee-like swarms of “Requiem” also by Ligeti. The music implies great revelation, standing on the cusp of universal breakthrough. The conflicting (and conspiring) tones of “Atmospheres” is supplanted by the main title, “Also Sprach Zarathustra”. Ligeti’s dissonant “Atmospheres” delivers an uneasy feeling after all we humans know nothing of what is really out there. This fine release enables the listener to delve deeper and unlock even more of the secrets of the universe. The same could be said of the soundtrack, reissued on CD by Rhino with four supplementary bonus tracks. The film was fiercely different, free of cliches and intensely determined not to dumb things down. Nothing North could come up with satisfied the fussy director as much as the classical pieces, so that is what was used on the final film. Stanley had been editing the film to a temporary score of classical music. Kubrick initially contacted Spartacus composer Alex North. Music (or even lack thereof) would be required to tell the audio story. No thruster sounds, no pinging space radar. Clarke sat down to write the “proverbial good science fiction movie”, they strove for a depth and realism that had yet to be attempted.
